Alpha Omega - The Oldest International Dental Organization!

Alpha Omega is the oldest international dental organization and was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1907 by a group of dental students originally to fight discrimination in dental schools. Today, with our headquarters relocated to Rockville, MD, it is primarily an educational and philanthropic organization. There are chapters and members in cities and dental schools in the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, Israel, South Africa and Australia/New Zealand. Alpha Omega represents about 6,000 active dentists and dental students worldwide.

Alpha Omega is responsible for the formation of both dental schools in Israel: The Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dentistry and the Tel Aviv University Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine. The Alpha Omega Foundation was also responsible for dispersing almost $250,000 this past year for projects in Israel and worldwide.

I am thrilled to be your new AO president and excited to embrace the opportunities before us in 2012. During the AO convention in Florida, I experienced the momentum and true essence of what AO is about: family and friendship. I know this exists in our entire organization.

Dr. Fred Margolis Awarded AO Meritorious Service Award

Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity is pleased to announce that Dr. Fred Margolis of Highland Park, Illinois is the recipient of the 2011 Meritorious Service Award, the highest honor that can be awarded to a member (frater). Through the years one considerable factor has been visible in the achievement of the Fraternity’s greatness and that is the continuing intense interest, responsibility and actions of so many of its Fraters. The Award for Meritorious Service was, therefore, created to honor Alpha Omega’s most outstanding Fraters.

2011 Presidential Citations

As one of his last duties as the 2011 AO President, Michael Tenenbaum presented the Presidential Citation to three very deserving AO members.

Albert Fessel, Brussels chapter, was recognized for his efforts to revitalize the chapter. He is also working to engage Jewish dentists not only Belgium but also work with other AO European chapter leaders.

Carlos Nurko, Dallas chapter, was recognized for organizing an event during the FDI conference in Mexico City for local Jewish dentists.

Gary Scharoff, Westchester chapter, was recognized for his exceptional efforts to help headquarters maintain its operational status while assisting the transition of the Association Director.

2011 AO Chapter Efficiency Awards Announced

The Alpha Omega Awards Committee would like to congratulate the following chapters for their excellence in Chapter Efficiency. Each individual chapter exemplifies what Alpha Omega stands for: the enhancements of the profession of dentistry, philanthropy and fraternalism with a base of Jewish ideals.

The Alumni Chapters recognized are Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, and Washington DC.

Dr. R. Bruce Donoff Receives 2011 AO Achievement Medal

Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity was pleased to present the 2011 Alpha Omega Achievement Medal to Dr. R. Bruce Donoff, Dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. R. Bruce Donoff, Dean of the HarvardSchool of Dental Medicine, received his DMD degree cum laude in 1967, and his MD degree in 1973, both from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and Medicine, respectively.

Dean Adam Stabholz Awarded 2012 Alpha Omega Achievement Medal

Congratulations to our beloved frater, Dean Adam Stabholz, who was awareded the 2012 Alpha Omega Achievement Medal.

Born in 1948 in Poland, Adam was 2 years old when his parents made Aliyah to Israel. Adam had a great role model in his father who was also a leader. As a physician in the Ghetto in Warsaw, he established a medical school in the Ghetto, so that the population there could receive medical care. His mother was a nurse. Both his parents eventually escaped from the Ghetto after which his father became a physician with the Partisans. Later, he joined the Russian Army and was involved in the liberation of Warsaw. After the war, he received an award from the Russian army for his contributions in providing medical care to the people in Warsaw.

2011 GOHI Challenge Award Winners

During the 2011 Alpha Omega International Convention in Fort Lauderdale, FL, four Global Oral Health Care Initiative 2011 Chapter Challenge Grants were presented.

Each award recipient will receive a $2500 grant. The GOHI Corporate Task Force members for 2011 are as follows: Henry Schein, SSWhite, Argen, and Heraeus. The Global Corporate Advisory Board Members: Steve Kess, Chair; Steven Anderson, Fred Margolis, Michael Stern, Richard Shapiro, and Mervyn Druian.
