A PIECE OF HISTORY
Los Angeles,
California - Dental history was made on
Sunday November 15, 2009, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Century City.
On this day, Alpha Omega embarked on a very unique and
meaningful journey: To save children's
smiles across the globe by preventing, treating and eradicating Early-in-Life
Oral Infection. This disease which
affects millions of children worldwide was brought to the forefront of our
attention by Dr. Hessam Nowzari, the Director of Advanced Periodontics at U.S.C.
Through research done by Dr. Nowzari, we have learned that
this self-limiting disease is caused by bacteria that are mediated by
viruses. Causing deformed smiles, ELOI socially
impairs its victims through a multitude of ways throughout their lifetime.
The good news is that the treatment and elimination of this
disease is simple and inexpensive and could be done by any informed individual. All that is needed to treat and eliminate
this disease on a global scale is awareness.
Indeed, Dr. Nowzari reported 100 percent cure rate amid 625 participants
of a particular population.
With the generous help and through the expertise of Dr.
Nowzari, Alpha Omega raised funds that will be donated to the D. Walter Cohen
Center at the Hebrew
University. Dean Adam Stabholz and Professor Moshe
Goldstein from the Hebrew University School of Dental Medicine are currently developing
a program for the treatment of ELOI based on Alpha Omega's initiative. Hopefully, this program will become a model
and template for other universities and countries around the globe.
I hereby challenge all chapters of Alpha Omega to implement
a fund-raising program that will answer this call. Through unity, we can affect the world by
adding smiles across nations. It all had
to start somewhere and now we are on our way.
