AO Detroit Mercy Chapter's Dominican Republic Mission Trip

Summary Report from the Detroit Mercy Board:

We are excited to announce that our Alpha Nu chapter has recently returned from our annual mission trip to the Dominican Republic and this year may have been our best trip yet! Now that the calm has settled, and we have had the opportunity to reflect on the work and experience, we would like to share some details of our trip with you. Our group, comprised of 29 students and 7 practicing dentists traveled to Puerto Plata, the Dominican Republic for 8 days. During 5 of these days, we ran a free dental clinic for members of the community.

Through the incredibly hard work of our group and supporting volunteers, we were able to see 334 patients and provide 516 dental procedures! Our work ranged from Oral Hygiene instruction to our youngest guests to surgical extraction of third molars. In total, we were able to provide 227 prophys, 158 extractions, and 98 restorations. Not only were we able to provide a tremendous amount of dental work to the community, each member of our group was able to grow and enhance their dental knowledge and partake in experiences that they will carry with them throughout their entire lives.

Members of the community, the medical center, and the church, were so thankful for our work throughout the week. At the end of the clinic, they threw us a celebration and presented our Alpha Nu chapter with an award of gratitude for our service. We were even featured on the local news! We are all overwhelmed with the gratitude the community showed and the impact we were able to make in just a few short days.

Of course, no trip to
Dominican Republic is complete without a little fun in the sun! We finished our trip with team bonding activates and the ability to relax on the beach. By the end of the week, our group was no longer just a group of members but 35 people who now consider each other family. We would like to send our sincere gratitude to everyone who donated supplies, prayed for us, and encouraged us. We would not have been able to be successful without everyone’s help!

With sincerest gratitude,

The Detroit Mercy Alpha Nu Board
