D. Walter Cohen Ambassadorship to Israel 2018 Report

Krupa Patel Dallas 1Contribution by Krupa Patel, AO University of Louisville Chapter

The externship to Dallas was an experience I am forever thankful. I applied to the program as I was going into the summer of my third year. I wanted this experience to help me understand what I wanted to do once I graduated but also to re-acclimate myself to real-world dentistry before starting in the clinic. I saw my first patient the Friday before I left for my trip to Dallas.  For the last two years, I have been torn between periodontics and public health dentistry after a GPR, and so I chose to spend my birthday out in Dallas, Tx trying to figure out which direction was I was headed.
Overview: I flew out of Louisville to Dallas on Saturday to be able to tour the city and spend time with family before beginning the externship on Monday. I was in contact with Dr. Mariya Barnett of the AO alumni chapter in Dallas who had put together a schedule where I would be able to extern at flourishing GP and periodontics practices. I was also able to learn a little more about the Mobile dentistry business model, Dr. Andrew Barnett (Periodontist) uses which was an entirely new concept for me.  Dr. Barnett also had set up an alumni dinner to welcome me to the externship where I got to meet some excellent AO Alum dentists.

Krupa Patel Dallas 2

My days usually began at about 7:30-8: 00 am and ended around 3 or 4. I had the opportunity to see a multitude of cases ranging from esthetics, implant placement, Sinus Augmentation, pre-op and post-op consultations, conscious sedation to name a few. It was such a great learning environment where everyone was willing to explain and educate me whenever there was something I didn’t understand or something I had learned in pre-clinic which I was now trying to apply to the scenario at hand. Overall, I had such a great time in Dallas, and I highly recommend anyone who is interested in specializing in or wanting to network in a new city. It was such a good experience meeting recent graduate alumni and those that are well established.  While I came back more confused than ever about which field I should apply into, I was sure about one thing I would be happy doing either, and I was glad that this externship was able to provide this clarity. Dallas is a great (foodie) city and one I put on my map as potential after graduation.
