As I sit down to write this Rosh Hashanah message, I am in a quandary over how to reconcile what has happened to our world in 5780. The global pandemic, which began almost a year ago, has been a horrific tragedy in and of itself but coupled with the violence, lawlessness, and the sharp rise in anti-Semitic attacks throughout the world, do we hope 5781 will be better?  No.

Throughout our history, tragedy has befallen us time and time again, yet we have endured, due in no small part to our strong faith that G-d will sustain us.  Faith, coupled with action, is what has allowed the Jewish people to survive and thrive, even in the face of thousands of years of adversity.

Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur is a time for reflection, introspection, and rededication.  We have much to reflect on during these “Days of Awe”…. How can we make things better when there seems an endless supply of anger and hate? Though this is not new.

I believe the answer lies in the simple premise that life is meaningful. Our days on Earth are numbered, so how can we give the most meaning to our lives while we are here?

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur have taught us repentance and rededication.  Let us rededicate ourselves to Alpha Omega in this time of need. One of the strongest tenants Alpha Omega has strived to achieve in our 113 years is “Tikkun Olam” or “Repairing the World.”  The world is in dire need of reparation.  Our patients have suffered due to Covid-19 and need our healing. Alpha Omega has and will continue to respond in every way we can to help our members and our patients during this crisis, but we need YOU.  AO is only as strong as its membership .

After the destruction of the 2nd Temple, the cleansing ritual could no longer be performed by the High Priest for the people during Yom Kippur, so every synagogue became a fragment of the Temple, and all Jews cleansed themselves before the Lord. Whether we congregate in person, virtually, or at home with our families, let us rededicate ourselves to our Faith, and each other through Alpha Omega International Dental Society. Only together will we be able to achieve our goal of doing what we can to heal our world.

We will again endure and make 5781 a better year.

Our fervent wishes for good health and happiness in the coming year.
